Testing
Methodology

Transparent, reproducible testing standards for evaluating cat litter performance across all metrics that matter to you and your cat.

Our Testing Philosophy

We believe testing should mirror real-world conditions. Our methodology prioritizes practical performance metrics that directly impact your daily experience and your cat's wellbeing.

All tests are conducted using standardized procedures that can be reproduced by others. Where possible, we use quantitative measurements rather than subjective impressions. When subjective assessment is necessary (such as odor evaluation), we use multiple testers and standardized scoring rubrics.

Editorial test notes are compiled by Mark Archer and technical assumptions are reviewed by Dr. Michael Rodriguez before they are translated into buyer-facing guidance.

Testing Categories

Odor Control Testing

How we measure odor elimination performance

Ammonia Detection

  • Use ammonia detection strips at standardized intervals
  • Measure concentration at 1, 4, 8, and 24 hours post-use
  • Controlled environment: 20°C, 50% humidity
  • Multiple test runs with fresh litter samples

Human Panel Evaluation

  • Blind testing with 5+ panel members
  • Standardized 0-5 odor intensity scale
  • Tests conducted at 6-hour intervals
  • Multiple litter boxes, randomized positions

Long-Term Effectiveness

  • Monitor odor control over full litter life (2-4 weeks)
  • Daily scooping per manufacturer recommendations
  • Document when odor breakthrough occurs
  • Compare days-to-odor-breakdown across products

Clumping Performance

Evaluating clump formation and durability

Clump Speed Test

  • Add 30ml water (simulating average urination)
  • Time clump formation to "scoopable" consistency
  • Measure at standard 3-inch litter depth
  • 10 replicates per product, average reported

Clump Integrity

  • Standardized scooping motion with measured pressure
  • Score clump hardness on 1-5 scale
  • Document crumbling, breakage, or sticking
  • Test durability during removal and transport

Urine Absorption

  • Measure litter volume used per clump
  • Test maximum absorption before saturation
  • Document wet-spot spread diameter
  • Calculate litter efficiency ratio

Dust Level Assessment

Quantifying airborne particles

Pouring Test

  • Pour 2kg from 30cm height into clean container
  • Visual dust assessment with backlighting
  • Video documentation for comparison
  • Score on standardized 0-5 dust scale

Scooping Dust

  • Standardized scooping motion (20 strokes)
  • Observe dust generation during daily use
  • Document accumulation on surrounding surfaces
  • Test at different litter depths and ages

Settling Test

  • Place black surface near litter box
  • Document dust accumulation over 7 days
  • Compare accumulation across products
  • Photographic documentation

Tracking Evaluation

Measuring litter scatter and spread

Exit Tracking

  • Standardized test area (1m² around box)
  • Count particles carried outside box per exit
  • Test with different box types and entry heights
  • Document tracking distance from box

Particle Size Analysis

  • Measure granule dimensions
  • Document dust vs. granule breakdown
  • Assess paw adhesion characteristics
  • Score texture and weight factors

Cat Acceptance Testing

Evaluating feline preference and comfort

Preference Testing

  • Side-by-side litter comparison in identical boxes
  • Document usage frequency over 7-day period
  • Test with multiple cats where possible
  • Calculate preference ratio

Behavioral Observation

  • Time spent digging and covering
  • Signs of discomfort or avoidance
  • Respiratory reactions (sneezing, avoidance)
  • Paw sensitivity indicators
Ethical Note: All cat testing is conducted in home environments with voluntary participation. No cats are restricted from using preferred litter alternatives during testing periods.

Controlled Testing Environment

To ensure reproducible results, we maintain standardized conditions across all product tests:

  • Temperature: 20-22°C (68-72°F) — typical indoor range
  • Humidity: 45-55% relative humidity
  • Ventilation: Standard home HVAC, no special air circulation
  • Litter Box: Standard 18"×14" open box unless testing specific types
  • Litter Depth: 3 inches (7.5cm) unless manufacturer specifies otherwise
  • Scooping: Once daily, same time each day
  • Testing Duration: Minimum 14 days per product

Our Scoring System

Products are rated on a 5-point scale across key performance categories:

5/5

Excellent

Top-tier performance, exceeds expectations, best-in-class

4/5

Very Good

Strong performance with minor limitations

3/5

Good

Adequate performance, meets basic expectations

2/5

Fair

Below average, notable limitations

1/5

Poor

Significant issues, not recommended
